Photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy is a relatively new treatment used in treating skin disorders, particularly, pre-cancerous lesions and certain types of skin cancers. It is an excellent alternative to surgery in certain cases.

How the treatment works

By applying a topical photosensitizing agent to the affect skin, the medicine absorbs into the skin, concentrating in cancer cells. A specific dose of specialized light applied to the treatment site results in a “photodynamic reaction” between the medicine, light source and oxygen molecules. The reaction generates a destructive effect on the cancer cells in preference to normal cells.

What to expect?

  • Your doctor will discuss with you whether your skin lesion is suitable for PDT treatment
  • After the area is prepared (gentle scraping/curettage of the skin), the treatment cream is applied
  • Area is covered and protected from sunlight
  • Patient can leave the surgery for 3 hours, and can return home if convenient
  • The cream and dressing is removed
  • The light source is applied to the treatment site, lasting less than 10 minutes
  • A mild burning sensation during this period is generally well tolerated
  • After treatment, the area can become red, swollen, and slightly crusted, settling within a few days. The wound might also be slightly itchy during the healing phase
  • For skin cancers, a second treatment within a fortnight is generally required to maximize effectiveness of treatment

Please discuss with our doctors whether photodynamic therapy may be an appropriate option for your skin cancer.
